Constituency: Ynys Môn

Rhun ap Iorwerth was first elected as a member for Ynys Môn in a by-election in August 2013. In June 2023, he became the Leader of Plaid Cymru.

He was born in Tonteg near Pontypridd before moving to Sir Meirionydd, and then to Ynys Môn. He was educated at Ysgol David Hughes and Cardiff University, where he graduated in Politics and Welsh. Fluent in Welsh and English, he is married and has three children. He is a sportsman and also refers to himself as an amateur musician!

Rhun was a journalist and broadcaster for almost 20 years before being elected. He joined BBC Wales in 1994, spending a period in Westminster before returning to Wales after the devolution vote in 1997. He was Chief Political Correspondent, a regular correspondent for BBC Network News, and presented a wide range of television and radio programmes, in Welsh. and English.

Since his first election, Rhun has spent periods as Shadow Minister for the Economy and Transport, Health and Care, and Finance, and as a member of the corresponding committees in the Assembly and the Senedd. He has also been a member at various times of the Public Accounts, Petitions and Standards Committees, as well as one of the Senedd Commissioners.
