A new partnership with local government

Plaid Cymru will renew the relationship between the Welsh Government and local authorities – ensuring that they are full partners in the design and delivery of public services.

We will:

  • Review the funding formula for local government so that it better reflects the real cost of delivering services in different parts of Wales, and introduce a funding floor to ensure that no local authority is disadvantaged.
  • Provide more core funding for local authorities to allocate to services and locally-determined priorities and reduce the amount of funding allocated to councils through fragmented and competitive grant funding – reducing bureaucracy and time wasted on grant applications that are not always successful.
  • Work collaboratively with councils on financial reforms – including to Council Tax and business rates, as well as implementation of the Tourism levy – including to ensure that more money reaches frontline services.
  • Support councils to provide and expand access to digitally-driven services and achieve Digital Service Standards.
