Sustainability, resources and rural resilience

Our super-abundance of natural resources – wind, water and waves – means that Wales is well-positioned to be a leader in the just green transition. With this comes exciting opportunities for economic and community development.

Our ability to produce sustainable food of exceptional quality is also a key asset – one which we must protect and build on.

A Plaid Cymru government will take bold new steps to address the overlapping climate and nature emergencies.

We will ensure that people, families and businesses in Wales really benefit from our renewable energy potential.

And we will strengthen our rural communities, support our farmers, and work to build a sustainable food system for Wales.

Actions in the first 100 days:

Tackling the climate and nature emergencies

  • Commence work on an updated Climate and Nature Action Plan for Wales, focused on charting a practical pathway to net zero by 2040 and substantive nature recovery by 2050

Renewables

  • Prioritise the preparation of a new National Energy Strategy, including a Renewable Energy Sector Deal and new measures to promote community-owned renewables
  • Unveil plans to develop Trydan Gwyrdd Cymru into a single, strengthened national energy company

Environmental and community resilience

  • Press the UK Government on environmental justice for coalfield communities and funding for restoring coal tips and contaminated land
  • Outline the terms of reference for a new Flood Resilience and Preparedness Forum for Wales that will bring together local authorities, Natural Resources Wales, emergency services, and community organisations to coordinate national strategy on flooding

Food, farming and rural communities

  • Confirm a multi-year funding cycle instead of the current one-year Sustainable Farming Scheme payment
  • Commission an independent review of the bureaucratic burden on family farms in Wales to reduce duplication and unnecessary paperwork for farmers
  • Begin work on a new and comprehensive National Food Strategy that will build food security and literacy, strengthen food supply chains, and use the Welsh public plate to support our food and drink industry
  • Bring forward proposals for a new statutory duty on rural proofing, to ensure that Welsh Government programmes and funding models are fully responsive to the needs of rural communities
