Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth MS and Westminster leader Liz Saville Roberts MP have released a statement ahead of the first anniversary of the 7 October Hamas attack, which prompted the current war in Gaza, which has now spread to neighbouring Lebanon, escalating towards a regional crisis.

Rhun ap Iorwerth and Liz Saville Roberts said:

“A year has passed since the shock and horror of the Hamas attack on October 7th, followed by Israel's ongoing, disproportionate response, which has so far claimed over 40,000 lives.

“Now, with the invasion of southern Lebanon and Iran’s missile strikes, the conflict risks escalating into a full-scale regional war. To avert catastrophe, we urgently need an immediate ceasefire across the region, the release of all hostages, and for international law to prevail without fear or favour.

“This widening conflict is devastating the region and poses a grave threat to global stability. The UK and other Western nations must intensify diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation. Ending all arms exports from the UK to the region is essential to preventing further escalation.

“Wales has a proud history of taking a stand on international issues. In November 2023, by supporting a motion from Plaid Cymru, the Senedd became one of the first parliaments in the world to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. As the threat of a wider regional war looms, we must reaffirm our commitment to peace.”
