Plaid Cymru Leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has today marked his party’s centenary by saying that a change of leadership for Wales is “essential” after next year’s Senedd election in order to safeguard the nation’s future and achieve its full potential.

Citing threats from years of “further failure” under Labour and “self-serving chaos” with Reform, Rhun ap Iorwerth MS said that only Plaid Cymru represents a credible alternative government offering Wales a fresh start.

Speaking from the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham where the party will mark its 100th anniversary, the Plaid Cymru Leader said:

“Plaid Cymru has been standing up for Wales for 100 years. We have never compromised when it comes to doing what’s right for our nation and its communities and it’s my privilege to be able to say that as Leader.

"Throughout its existence, Plaid Cymru has remained true to its values whilst other parties have compromised on theirs in the pursuit of power.

“Today, I pay tribute to all those who have played a part in our movement’s contribution to Welsh public life, a movement that grew from our communities, for our communities.

“Next year’s Senedd election offers an opportunity to bring about real change. That change of leadership for Wales is essential if we are to safeguard our nation’s future from years of failure under Labour or self-serving chaos with Reform.

“Plaid Cymru is focused on offering the people of Wales the kind of leadership they need and deserve. An ambitious government with fresh ideas on how to cut waiting lists, help households with the cost-of-living, support businesses and ensure that Wales’s voice is not ignored by Westminster.

“Whether on HS2, welfare, control over our natural resources or the age-old injustice of how Wales is funded, no London-based party has ever put Welsh interests firsts. That is why Plaid Cymru is different.

“A Plaid Cymru government, if elected next May, would not bow down to Keir Starmer but would be relentless in pursuing a fairer deal for Wales.

“The alternative is four more years of Labour failing to deliver and making excuses for their bosses in Westminster or Reform, living proof that empty vessels make the loudest noise.”
