Starmer has “failed at every opportunity” to commit to fair funding for Wales, says Rhun ap Iorwerth

The Senedd will today (20th March 2024) debate Plaid Cymru’s motion demanding fair funding for Wales, calling upon the UK Government, and a likely future UK Labour Government, to end the unfair Barnett formula.

The current funding model has resulted in billions being “denied” to Wales from the HS2 project and public services suffering from a lack of investment.

Plaid Cymru leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth MS, said that Starmer has so far failed to commit to fair funding for Wales, and urged the likely future First Minister, Vaughan Gething MS, to “put his country before his party” and demand Labour to commit to a fair funding model based on Wales’ needs rather than population.

Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth MS said:

“While Labour MSs ask us to trust an incoming Labour Government to do the right thing by Wales, the reality is that Keir Starmer has failed at every opportunity to commit to a fair funding model based on Wales’s needs.

“As it stands Wales continues to be denied billions from HS2, we’ve lost over a billion pounds from the Welsh budget this year alone, and public services are suffering.

“The incoming First Minister’s first priority must be to put his country before his party and demand replacing the outdated Barnett formula with a fair funding model for Wales. Plaid Cymru will always put Wales’ interests first.”
