Plaid Cymru can be a political home for all who believe that Wales' future should be to remain as a nation within Europe. Still not sure? Read on and decide for yourself...
1. Plaid Cymru is the only party that can Beat Brexit
Following the European election, Wales now faces a choice of two futures.
On the one hand, there is the narrow minded, inward looking future of a British Brexit that would see Wales cut off from our friends in the EU, suffer costs to our communities and put jobs at risk.
On the other hand, there is the bright and better European future for Wales offered by Plaid Cymru which would see our communities, industry, and agriculture all thrive as part of a wider European community of equals.
The so-called Brexit party cannot be trusted and they certainly do not have the interests of Wales at heart. For them, it’s not really about taking back control. It’s not even about us. It is all about concentrating power in the hands of a few wealthy Brexiteers, and taking power away from Wales and its people.
Plaid Cymru believe that the best future for Wales is one inside the EU as a green, open and progressive country, free from hatred and xenophobia where all are welcome. That's the future we're going to fight for.
Plaid Cymru is the only party that can beat Brexit in Wales and we’re ready to take them on to defend the Welsh national interest - and our future.
2. Because we care about Wales
What drives us in Plaid Cymru more than anything else is the well-being of all the people of Wales. We want to make the lives of the people of Wales better. We want to make sure that Wales is the best place in the world for health and social care, for education, for jobs, for infrastructure, and for equality.
We can see that decades of Westminster neglect have resulted in poverty and under-investment in our nation. A third of our children are living in relative poverty. You only have to look at the Brexit chaos to see that Westminster is not fit to govern or represent Wales.
The EU has done its bit in terms of investing in Wales. For generations, it’s Westminster that has ignored us, failing to invest in our communities and while the Westminster parties squabble amongst themselves about Brexit, Wales is being left behind yet again.
It's time for change. We cannot continue to look to the Westminster parties for answers. We can only look to ourselves. We can choose to take our future into our own hands. We can choose a brighter, and better future for Wales at the heart of Europe.
Imagine what an outward, fairer, progressive and welcoming country, with all the democratic and economic levers it needs and where anyone who wants to be Welsh can call Wales their home, could contribute to the world! That’s what Plaid Cymru wants to see and that’s what Plaid Cymru will do.
3. We’re the Greenest party
Did you know that the Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe ranked Plaid Cymru as the best UK party in the European Parliament on tackling climate change?
CAN Europe analysed the voting records of MEPs on a range of environmental policies including emissions trading, energy efficiency, and land use, and created a scoreboard of how ambitious parties have been in terms of tackling climate change. Plaid Cymru ranked first, with an average score of 96%, and was given the title ‘Defender’.
We were also the party that tabled a climate debate which saw our Senedd become one of the first in the world to declare a climate emergency. Our policies are all focused on green and sustainable solutions for our future.
Climate change is the single most important issue to the future of humankind and we would solve it by committing to moving to 100% renewable energy, rolling out a Wales-wide £3bn home energy efficiency programme, tackling harmful pollution and plastic waste, and developing sustainable, green jobs.
Wales can lead Europe and the world in tackling climate change.
4. We care about EU Citizens
Families facing uncertainty by being forced to apply for settled status with some applications already rejected. People disenfranchised from voting in the European election just because they're EU Citizens. ERASMUS and EU students not knowing the future of their studies.
Westminster has disregarded our fellow EU citizens at every turn since the referendum.
Most recently, the UK Government’s mishandling of Brexit led to local authorities not having enough time to write to EU citizens resident in Wales asking them whether they wanted to vote in Wales or in their home Member State. That means that potentially 78% of EU citizens who live and work here in Wales, and who make a huge contribution to Welsh life, were left without a voice or a vote on May 23rd.
EU Citizens are our families, friends, co-workers, neighbours, fellow citizens. We will protect them here in Wales from the mismanagement and carelessness of Westminster.
5. We’re consistent and honest
From the very start of this Brexit nightmare, Plaid Cymru have been consistent and united on Brexit policy.
We have always been an unambiguously a pro-Remain and a pro-People’s Vote party.
Our honest view is that there is no such thing as a Brexit which is good for Wales and we will never support anything that threatens our economy and the livelihoods of the people of Wales.
We are unwilling to sacrifice our futures, our Welsh NHS, and our wellbeing on the altar of a disastrous, broken, British Brexit.
Because while the Westminster parties continue to wrap themselves around each other in a Brexit tangle, we believe that the right and democratic thing to do is to put the question to you.
Politics is changing. On May 23rd, thousands of us joined together to reject the backwards looking Brexit of Britain, for the hope of an open, better future for Wales. We are grateful to every single one of you who backed Plaid Cymru in this election, particularly the supporters of other parties who voted for us for the time. We're grateful and ask that you stick with us so we can continue to build a new Wales in a new Europe together.
