Stopping Benefit Sanctions
Plaid Cymru opposes the Conservatives’ proposed changes to the Work Capability Assessment and their ‘Back to Work’ plan, which again appears to blame people for being unwell and unable to work as they would wish to do so. We reject the discourse of blaming people for the circumstances in which they find themselves.
Benefit sanctions and the delays in receipt of Universal Credit lead to hardship which does not help people in returning to work. The timetable for receipt of first payments of Universal Credit should be shortened so that individuals and families do not get into substantial debt, and repayments should operate on the basis of supporting people.
