If there is a General Election instead of a referendum then pro-Remain parties should “campaign on a policy of revoking Article 50 and remaining in the EU” Plaid Cymru have said.

The call comes after Plaid Cymru submitted an amendment to the upcoming Senedd recall debate on Thursday following the prorogation of the Westminster Parliament last week.

The Welsh Government and Plaid Cymru’s jointly tabled a motion opposes prorogation, reiterates the Assembly’s opposition to no-deal and calls on MPs to use legal and constitutional means of stopping no-deal and to ensure that the decision should be put back to the electorate.

Plaid Cymru’s amendment calls on pro-Remain parties, in the event of a General Election, to campaign on a policy of revoking Article 50 and remaining in the EU.

It also says that the revocation of Article 50 should be used as a mechanism to prevent a crash out Brexit.

Delyth Jewell AM and Plaid Cymru shadow minister for international affairs said that if the electorate are ‘denied the opportunity’ to have a referendum, then pro-Remain parties ‘have a duty’ to campaign on a platform of revoking Article 50 and remaining in the EU in the event of a general election.

Ms Jewell said that there “must be a clear cut choice” between the chaos of a crash-out Brexit and the stability offered by revoking Article 50 and remaining in the EU.

Delyth Jewell AM and Plaid Cymru shadow minister for international affairs said,

“Time is running out and a crash-out Brexit is looming. If the electorate are denied the opportunity to have their final say through a referendum, then pro-Remain parties have a duty to campaign on a policy of revoking Article 50 and remaining in the EU if there’s a General Election.

“There must be a clear cut choice – chaos in a crash out Brexit or safety, security and stability through revoking Article 50 and remaining in the EU.

“The Prime Minister cannot silence our Senedd and when our Welsh Parliament is recalled on Thursday, I along with my Plaid Cymru colleagues will be making the case loud and clear for Revoke to be the Brexit safety net our nation needs.
