Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe has ranked Plaid Cymru as the best UK party in the European Parliament on tackling climate change.
CAN Europe has analysed the voting records of MEPs on a range of environmental policies including emissions trading, energy efficiency, and land use, and created a scoreboard of how ambitious parties have been in terms of tackling climate change.
Plaid Cymru ranked first, with an average score of 96%, and was given the title ‘Defender’ (as opposed to ‘Delayer’ or ‘Dinosaur’).
Plaid Cymru’s Jill Evans MEP said:
“I am very pleased to see that Plaid Cymru has been recognised as having the highest ambition to tackle climate change of all UK parties in the European Parliament. Just imagine what more we could do with more seats.
“Climate change is the single most important issue to the future of humankind. National level action is crucial, but Europe must also lead the way in tackling the climate crisis.
“Plaid Cymru wants to implement a Green New Deal for Europe. We would tackle climate change by committing to moving to 100% renewable energy, tackling harmful pollution and plastic waste, and developing sustainable, green jobs.
“We want Wales to play our part in leading the world in tackling climate change. That’s why we want to roll out a Wales-wide £3 billion home energy efficiency programme.
“By taking our rightful place at the heart of Europe, and by electing a Plaid Cymru Government in 2021, Wales can lead the world in tackling climate change.”
