Plaid Cymru MPs and Assembly Members unite to call for Clean Air Act for Wales

Plaid Cymru politicians in Wales and Westminster are calling for a Clean Air Act for Wales to improve air quality.

Air pollution contributes to an estimated 2,000 deaths in Wales per year.

Mid and West AM Simon Thomas, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Climate Change and Rural Affairs said,

“Public Health Wales describes the situation as an urgent public health crisis, second only to smoking. The impact on young children’s lungs and health is particularly pernicious. It is up to us to start to do something about inaction by Conservative and Labour Governments.

“Diesel vehicles are major contributors in urban areas, with roadside levels highest where traffic is busiest. So Plaid Cymru will introduce a Clean Air Act for Wales to phase out the sale of diesel and petrol only vehicles by 2030 and give support for the transition to cleaner cars. To help prepare the way, Plaid Cymru will hold a Clean Air Week next week.

“I’ve pointed out the lack of drive by the Labour Government here in Wales to tackle the issue of air pollution; asking them to introduce clean air zones to change behaviour and improve the health of citizens.”

Dwyfor Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts added,

“It is important that we step back, take stock and mark Clean Air Week, particularly in Wales where we have some of the worst air quality in the UK. I very much welcome the proposal by Simon Thomas for a Clean Air Act for Wales to improve the air we breathe.

“This is yet another example of Plaid Cymru leading the legislative agenda where Labour are lagging behind. The Tory UK Government and Labour Welsh Government have been taken to court for not doing enough to tackle air pollution – and we cannot let this go on any longer.

“Colleagues across the House of Commons must support Plaid Cymru’s proposals for the sale of diesel and petrol cars to be phased out by 2030, for fuel duty income to come to Wales to be spent on alternative transport options that improve air quality, and for a real world emissions testing for all vehicles.”
