Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price AM has kickstarted the campaign for Welsh independence by inviting pro-independence groups Yes Cymru, AUOB Cymru, and Undod to join a pre-emptive official campaign body.
Mr Price has invited the groups to join Plaid Cymru to form a group that would become the official pro-independence campaign body in a referendum.
Since May, people across Wales have been mobilised in support of independence, with thousands turning out at pro-independence marches organised by AUOB Cymru in Cardiff, Caernarfon, and Merthyr Tydfil.
Last month, a YouGov poll commissioned by Plaid Cymru placed support for independence at its highest ever level – 41% – if it meant Wales could remain a member of the European Union.
In his letter, Mr Price said that Plaid Cymru had started the “detailed work” in preparation for independence, and that a Plaid Cymru government would secure a referendum.
But Mr Price continued that making the case for full self-government was “not the work of one person, one party or one organisation”, and that securing a Yes vote required cooperation between a number of organisations to “deliver the most effective political campaign in our nation’s history.”
Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price AM said:
“As Westminster further neglects Wales and its people, thousands have been mobilised to march in defiance the length and breadth of our country.
“It is now time for people to come together and outline what will become Wales’s official pro-independence referendum campaign.
“We propose that all of us who want to secure a Yes vote convene at the earliest possible opportunity. In these extraordinary times we cannot delay any further.
“The promise of a new Wales is tantalisingly close. Through cooperation and collaboration, we can deliver the most effective political campaign in our nation’s history.
“A Plaid Cymru Government will secure the referendum and together with you we will secure the result.
“Our prize will be a fairer, greener, more prosperous Wales through independence – let’s win it as one.”
