Ahead of a debate on Plaid Cymru’s motion for a confirmatory EU referendum this afternoon, the party’s Brexit spokesperson has said that a “people’s vote is the only way out of this Brexit mess”.
Delyth Jewell AM, Plaid’s Shadow International Affairs Minister, is calling on AMs to support the party’s motion today, so that the ‘unequivocal’ will of the National Assembly can be made known.
Ms Jewell said that Plaid Cymru opposes Brexit because of the damage it would cause to Wales, and wants Wales to Remain in the European Union. A People’s Vote with Remain on the ballot paper, she said, is the “best and most democratic thing to do”.
Plaid Cymru’s Shadow International Affairs Minister Delyth Jewell AM said:
“Just like people all across Wales and indeed the UK, we can see that we have been taken down a road that leads to a dead-end. What’s more, the Tory leadership contest is already making a no deal Brexit a more likely scenario.
“Plaid Cymru has been consistently unambiguous that we could never and would never accept such an outcome because of the extreme damage it would inflict on Wales’ communities and businesses.
“We have also been clear about our belief that there is no such thing as a good version of Brexit. That’s why we oppose Brexit entirely and want to see Wales remain a member of the European Union.
“Putting Brexit back to the people, with Remain on the ballot paper, is the best and most democratic thing to do. It is imperative that the National Assembly now give its full backing to a People’s Vote, because that is the only conceivable way out of this Brexit mess.”
