‘No Deal Brexit should not be allowed to go ahead without the people’s consent’ – Steffan Lewis AM

Responding to the publication of the UK Government’s technical notices regarding preparations for a ‘no deal’ Brexit scenario, Plaid Cymru External Affairs spokesperson Steffan Lewis AM said:

“It is becoming increasingly clear that leaving the EU without a deal would be a mistake of historic proportions which would cause great harm to people’s livelihoods, wellbeing and security.

“When government is telling businesses to consider paying for the services of a ‘customs broker, freight forwarder or logistics provider’ and advising them to invest in software and warehousing, it’s clear something is seriously wrong.

“The Health Secretary today confirmed that drug companies have been instructed to stockpile medicine to prepare for the possibility of a no deal exit – this should not be happening in a developed state in the 21st century.

“The NFU recently warned that a ‘cliff-edge Brexit could bring farms to the brink of collapse’[1], and this week in Wales the Welsh Fishermen's Association said that many of Wales' fishermen will ‘not survive’ a no deal Brexit[2].

“It is reasonable to assume that most people who voted to leave expected the government to be able to come to some sort of agreement with the EU and that it would not lead to the wholesale collapse of industries and emergency procedures seen usually only in times of war.

“It is therefore Plaid Cymru’s view that there is no mandate for a disastrous no deal Brexit and the people should therefore be allowed to vote on whether or not such a scenario should be allowed to happen, if no deal is agreed.

“This stance is supported by the people of Wales as shown in a recent YouGov poll[3], and is the only sensible course of action given the growing possibility of a serious economic crisis that could be avoided.”
