The Labour Party is enabling a Tory hard Brexit and abandoning remainers, Plaid Cymru has said.
Plaid Cymru’s leader in Westminster, Liz Saville Roberts MP, has accused the Labour Party of indulging in the same fantasy politics as the Tories, of “single market rewards without responsibility”.
The attack follows a decision by the Labour Party to water down a crucial amendment from the House of Lords to keep the UK in the Single Market through European Economic Area (EEA) membership. If the Labour Party supported the amendment, a government defeat would be likely, forcing the government to deliver a soft Brexit. The decision to water down the amendment will make the government defeat highly unlikely, enabling the Tories to deliver a hard-Brexit.
Plaid Cymru had previously urged the Labour Party to support Single Market membership and alter the course of Brexit. Instead, they will go down in history as the enablers to a Tory hard-Brexit.
Ms Saville Roberts attacked both the Prime Minister and the Labour leader in Prime Minister’s Questions today:
Liz Saville Roberts MP asked:
“The Brexit vote means families are already £900 a year worse off while both the Tories and Labour peddle the fiction of single market rewards without responsibility.
“I ask the Prime Minster and her honourable friends in the opposition: how much poorer will families become as they indulge in fantasy politics?”
Commenting, Plaid Cymru’s leader in Westminster, Liz Saville Roberts MP said:
“Tuesday’s vote on the Single Market amendment will be the defining vote of this Parliament. Labour’s support would have made a government defeat almost inevitable, securing a soft-Brexit and protecting jobs, wages and standard of living across the whole of the UK.
“Instead, the Labour Party has chosen to abandon remainers, water down the amendment and in so doing, enabling the Tories to deliver their damaging and reckless hard-Brexit.
“The tragedy of this Brexit debate is that both the UK Government and the so-called official opposition share the same Brexit policy. Both the Tories and the Labour Party continue to indulge in the fantasy of single market rewards without responsibility.
“While the Labour Party’s words promise a ‘jobs first Brexit’, their actions are enabling the Tories to sacrifice jobs. Plaid Cymru will continue to fight to protect the interests of families, businesses and farmers and keep the whole of the UK in the Single Market and the Customs Union.”
