Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price has called for an emergency summit following shocking figures showing Wales as the only country in the UK to see a rise in child poverty.
According to research by End Child Poverty Network - a coalition of organisations which includes Children in Wales, Oxfam Cymru, Barnardo's Cymru and Save The Children, Wales was the only UK nation to see a rise in child poverty last year.
The research suggested more than 206,000 Welsh children were living in poverty in 2017-18.
Leanne Wood Plaid Cymru AM and shadow minister for social justice said that the research was a “damning indictment of the Labour Welsh Government”. Plaid Cymru Leader Adam Price said Labour should take responsibility and use the levers available to end the endemic poverty that “should be part of our past”.
Leanne Wood AM and shadow minister for social justice said,
“The research showing Wales was the only nation to experience a rise in child poverty is a damning indictment of the Labour Welsh Government. They continually blame the UK government’s austerity and benefit cuts for this rise, without understanding that if that was the case every nation would see child poverty rising.
“What this shows is that Scotland has been more successful in mitigating austerity and benefit cuts than Welsh Labour, who continue to even refuse to take the same powers as Scotland over benefits. People in Wales are increasingly tired of the culture of excuses that is the hallmark of this government.”
Speaking on ITV Wales this morning Plaid Cymru Leader Adam Price added,
“This should be a wakeup call that politics is failing the next generation. We need an emergency summit by Welsh Government now to see what is going wrong.
“It is no good blaming Westminster when there are powers, tools and levers available to us to start to turn around the situation for the children facing the kind of endemic poverty that should be part of our past.
