We Will Put the Welsh Economy at the Fore of Our Brexit Representations, says Plaid Cymru’s Leanne

Plaid Cymru Leader Leanne Wood has said her party will put the Welsh economy first and fight “an extreme Tory Brexit.”

The Rhondda AM made the comments during a discussion on the BBC Wales’ Sunday Politics programme ahead of the triggering of Article 50 next week. Ms Wood cited the potential damage that an extreme Brexit could have on the Welsh economy and the Welsh agriculture sector in particular.

Currently, 67% of Welsh exports go to the Single Market, along with 90% of all Welsh lamb exports.

“The Tories must justify why they think taking us out of the Single Market is a good idea,” said the Party of Wales Leader.

“They have had many industry bosses and farming unions telling them of the many pitfalls that await if we withdraw from the Single Market.

“When it comes to the Prime Minister and the Tories, it is like talking to a brick wall. They are not listening to the many voices who are calling for us to retain membership of the Single Market after Brexit.

“They must also come good on the promises that Wales would not lose a penny of funding after our withdrawal from the EU. Many people voted ‘Leave’ in good faith after those assurances on our nation’s funding were made.

“The time for Tory weasel words is over – they must either deliver a cast iron promise or admit they were misleading the electorate.”

Ms Wood added: “It is also on incumbent on the Tory Westminster Government to guarantee the rights of EU nationals living in Wales. At the moment there is uncertainty, anxiety and stress for the thousands of EU nationals who have made their home in Wales.

“They should not be used as political pawns in the Brexit negotiations. The fact is that in the Welsh NHS, you’re more likely to be treated by a migrant than to see one in the queue.

“There must also be a commitment from the UK Government not to roll back any powers from Wales. Talk of “not removing current decisions” is weak and doesn’t cover everything we might want to do as an Assembly in the future.

“Plaid Cymru will strongly fight any Tory plans to ‘smash and grab’ Welsh powers after Brexit is triggered.”
