The Labour Welsh Government is once again preparing to roll over rather than stand up for Wales, says Steffan Lewis AM.
After promising a meaningful vote in the Assembly on Theresa May’s Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration, they’ve laid down a motion that simply notes the facts without setting out a clear Welsh Government view on the biggest political issues of our era.
Speaking ahead of the vote, Plaid Cymru’s Shadow Cabinet Secretary for External Affairs Steffan Lewis AM said:
“The motion put forward by the Welsh Government is a whitewash that represents a complete failure to offer leadership at the most momentous period in the history of devolution.
“Last week in Westminster Jeremy Corbyn accused Theresa May off offering ‘a vague menu of options, not a plan for the future’ yet here in Wales the Labour government is doing exactly the same.
“It is not acceptable for Labour to duck and weave their way through the biggest issues of our time by prioritising papering over the cracks in their own party rather than acting in Wales' interest.
“Plaid Cymru has laid down meaningful amendments which will force AMs to take substantive positions on European single market and customs union membership, explicitly rejecting the Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declarations and unambiguously backing a People’s Vote, with an option to remain.
“I would urge Labour AMs to search their consciences and consider backing Plaid Cymru’s amendments so that the Welsh Assembly sends a clear message to the UK Government that we will not consent to a damaging Brexit that will harm the Welsh economy.”
